A good morning routine does two things: it protects your skin and it gets you out the door. It doesn't need ten steps, its own shelf, or a new serum every month.

Really, it comes down to a few steps: cleanse if your skin asks for it, add moisture, finish with sunscreen, and reach for a targeted treatment only when there's a real problem to solve.

Cream, cleanser, and skincare tools arranged on a counter
Most good mornings come down to four things: cleanse, hydrate, protect, and maybe one treatment.

Cleanse only as much as your skin asks for

If your face feels comfortable when you wake up, a splash of water might be all you need. If you slept in a heavy night cream, sweat overnight, or run oily, reach for a gentle cleanser that leaves your skin soft instead of squeaky.

You're not trying to scrub your skin clean. You're just clearing the way for everything that comes next.

Moisturize for the skin you actually have

Light gel creams tend to suit oily and combination skin. If yours runs dry or feels fragile, a richer cream with ceramides, glycerin, or squalane will feel kinder.

And if your sunscreen is hydrating enough on its own, you can often skip a separate moisturizer altogether.

Let sunscreen be the step you never skip

Daily sunscreen is what makes everything else worth doing. Find one you like enough to put on generously, every day.

Texture is everything here. If an SPF pills under makeup or stings your eyes, don't give up on sunscreen — just find a different one.

  • Dry skin: go for creamy, hydrating formulas.
  • Oily skin: try a fluid, gel, or soft-matte finish.
  • Wear makeup? Test how it sits over moisturizer before you commit.
